How is the schoolyear organized in Berlin?

In Germany, a schoolyear is divided into two semesters: the winter semester at UdK usually begins in the second half of October and ends around the middle of February. The summer semester begins in the second half of April and ends mid-July.

When do the entrance examinations take place?

The exams are usually at the beginning of February for the summer semester and early July for the winter semester.

When is the application deadline?

The application deadline is November 14th for the February audition, and April 14th for the July audition. These dates may vary slightly. Therefore, please check for updates under

How long is the course of study?

Those who have never been enrolled at a music conservatory enter the Grundstudium, which normally lasts four semesters, then continue on to the six semester - long Hauptstudium. This ends with the diploma.
Those who have already received a diploma from a foreign music school, can enter the Hauptstudium and graduate with a diploma.
Those with a diplom from another German Hochschule can apply for the Zusatzstudium, which is equivalent to the "3. cycle" of the Paris Conservatory. Please also see "Studium".

Which works have to be prepared for the entrance examination?

Applicants to the Grund- and Hauptstudium must prepare
-a work by Bach (Prelude and Fugue from the Well - tempered Clavier, or a Suite, Partita, Toccata, Italian
Concerto, Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, etc.)
- a sonata or a major set of variations by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
- a work of free choice from a different period
At the end of the audition, the applicant will be asked to sightread a short piece.

Applicants to the Zusatzstudium must prepare:
- a work by Bach
- a work from the Viennese Classic (not including Schubert)
- a work from the Romantic period
- a work from around 1900, or the classical modern period, such as Bartók, Prokofieff, Hindemith, Messiaen
- a work composed after 1960
- an etude by Chopin
